The Challenge Of Selling A Small Business

Selling a small business may seem like a hopelessly complicated and difficult process. Today, small business owners are faced with more challenges than ever when selling a business.

A few of these challenges are:

Competition: Over a million small businesses are put up for sale each year. In addition, there are hundreds of MLM opportunities and over a thousand franchises that a business opportunity seeker can pick and choose from. Many of these opportunities are viewed as offering greater potential and lower risk than an existing, local business.

Time: 15 out of every 16 people who respond to "business for sale" ads never wind up buying a business. Yet the small business owner who runs one of these ads must answer each inquiry. This can be a great investment of the business owner's time with no reward.

Risk: Another drawback to selling a business through the classifieds is that it lets everybody know you want to sell. When word gets out that you're selling the business, several things can happen, most of them bad. Employees get nervous they may loose their job. Suppliers wonder if they will get paid. Customers delay placing re-orders or extending contracts because they don't know whom they will be dealing with in the future.

Money: When the biggest challenge of selling a small business - finding a qualified buyer - is not met, every option you have left will cost you money. First, instead of selling the business, you can liquidate the company's assets. Second, you can settle for a much lower price from a business buyer whose budget didn't meet your original asking price. Or third, you can pay an average of 12% of the selling price to a broker if he can find a buyer for you.
